For the People Act
The For the People Act is a ground-breaking reform Act that would transform and modernize: 1) Voting, 2) Campaign Finance, and 3) Political Ethics.
We need all hands on deck to get the bill passed in the U.S. Senate. Say you’ll join the fight to reform democracy:
The For the People Act is a comprehensive voting rights, campaign finance, and political ethics bill that would strengthen democracy and fight voter suppression.
Here’s what the bill would do:
Voting Reforms
Enhance voter access
Add automatic voter registration (with an opt out option)
Extend early voting (at least 15 days before the election & 10 hours per day)
Implement universal access to voting by mail
Mandate same day voter registration
Add inclusive voter ID laws
Prevent voter intimidation and voter purging
Ban partisan Congressional gerrymandering
Mandate that absent uniformed service voters and overseas voters need to receive absentee ballots at least 45 days prior to Election Day
Restore voting rights of formerly incarcerated citizens
Campaign Finance Reforms
Implement a small donor financing system for Congressional campaigns, that would include 6-1 matching system of donations up to $200. This would be funded through assessments from criminal convictions, settlements, and corporate surcharges – NOT financed by taxpayers.
Prevent Foreign election interference
Require disclosure of all campaign donors who give $10,000+
Launch a public database of all political ad purchases for more than $500
Add restrictions on purchasing political ads by foreign nationals
Implement disclosure requirements of organizations who support political ads.
Enforce Secret money transparency
Encourage ordinary Americans to run for office by authorizing campaign finance usage for childcare, elderly care, health insurance payments, and professional development
Political Ethics Reforms
Mandate tax return disclosures for the President and Vice President
Implement ethical reforms of Supreme Court
Close the revolving door between the White House and K Street lobbying firms
Mandate ethic requirements of Presidential appointees, federal employees & others
Stop Members of Congress from using public funds to settle discrimination lawsuits
Speak out to strengthen our democracy
The House version of the bill (H.R. 1) passed the House on March 3rd by a vote of 220-210. The Senate version of the bill (S.1) was introduced on March 17. If we want to protect voting rights and fight voter suppression, we must demand that the Senate pass S. 1, For the People Act.
Call both of your U.S. Senators and demand that they support S. 1, For the People Act. You can find the contact information for your U.S. Senators here. You can also call the United States Capitol switchboard at (202) 224-3121 to be connected by an operator.
Here’s what you can say:
Hi, my name is [YOUR NAME], and I'm from [CITY].
I'm supporting the For the People Act because I'm tired of our state legislators playing politics with our elections, and I want to make voting easier and have less secret money in politics.
I want Senator [NAME] to support it as well.
If we had the changes in the For the People Act, it would be easier for me to know that Senator [NAME] is there representing me and not just [his/her] donors.
Can I count on Senator [NAME] to support S.1, For the People Act?
Note: If you leave a voicemail, be sure to include your address to ensure that your call is tallied.
Stay up to date
Over the next few months, the U.S Senate will hold hearings and committee markups as they consider the For the People Act. Meanwhile, GOP state legislators will continue to chip away at voting rights – there are more than 200 bills in 43 states that are trying to make it harder for people to vote.
